When viking raiders appeared on the horizon, local people tended to run away as fast and as far as they could. If they had time, they would collect what valuables they had so that they would not fall into viking hands. Some settlements had special fortifications built specifically for hiding inside. The vikings could not break in to harm them and the villagers knew that the raiders would have to leave eventually before real soldiers arrived.
It should be pointed out that not all vikings were raiders. Many traveled far and wide as merchants and colonists. Seeing a viking ship coming was not always something to inspire terror.
During the time of the Vikings there were no American settlers yet. The Vikings were the settlers. The native red men were the Americans. At first relations were friendly, but then the natives attcked. It is theorized that the natives became very sick from dairy products; milk and cheese, traded with the Vikings, because they were not used to it. The natives, assuming they had been victims of a poisoning attempt, attacked repeatedly. The Vikings resisted fiercely and repelled the attacks each time, but they were eventually convinced to pack up and sail home.

Natives of where? To the other Europeans they mostly traded with them. Sometimes they would find an easy village or a defenseless monastery they would raid it, simply for the wealth they could steal. To the Native Americans they attempted to set up trade with them, but according to the sagas, it went foul when some of the Natives approached the Viking armory, and the guard killed one. They fought a battle, in which the Vikings lead the charge with their bull (the Native Americans had never seen such an animal and were deathly afraid of it). After the battle, the Vikings knew they wouldn't be able to stay there in peace, and so left.

Natives strongly supported the British side. Natives saw the American Revolution as their last chance to win back North America. When the British government showed up they gave natives weapons so they would attack the colonist. Natives who were on the losing side suffered greatly after the Revolution. The U.S. government took land in a rapid pace after the revolution.
