A dark Cave. In the middle, a Caldron boiling. Thunder.

Enter the three Witches.

1 WITCH. Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd.

2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin'd.

3 WITCH. Harpier cries:-'tis time! 'tis time!

1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;

In the poison'd entrails throw.-

Toad, that under cold stone,

Days and nights has thirty-one;

Swelter'd venom sleeping got,

Boil thou first i' the charmed pot!

ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

2 WITCH. Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the caldron boil and bake;

Eye of newt, and toe of frog,

Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,

Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,-

For a charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

3 WITCH. Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf;

Witches' mummy; maw and gulf

Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark;

Root of hemlock digg'd i the dark;

Liver of blaspheming Jew;

Gall of goat, and slips of yew

Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse;

Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips;

Finger of birth-strangled babe

Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,-

Make the gruel thick and slab:

Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,

For the ingredients of our caldron.

ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;

Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

2 WITCH. Cool it with a baboon's blood,

Then the charm is firm and good.

its all there...

They mess with him psychologically by telling him that he will become king so he gets his hopes up and thinks it will happen. However, he only becomes King because Lady Macbeth forces it to happen.

they tell the prophecy of Macbeth that he will become king which encourages Macbeth to kill Duncan.

however Hecate also wants to destroy Macbeth so during the end of the novel the last apparition shows that Banquo's descendants and children to be king which make Macbeth turn absolutely furious and in greed of power and kingship even more.

The witches in the play 'Macbeth' were able to establish their supernatural powers. They did so, by appearing and disappearing at will. For example, they spoke to Banquo and Macbeth, and suddenly vanished before they could be seen by the noblemen Angus and Ross. Macbeth saw the witches a second time. They gave him more predictions, and quickly vanished before they could be seen by the nobleman Lennox. The witches also established their supernatural powers by predicting the future. They knew that Macbeth would be given the title and the properties of the Thane of Cawdor before Macbeth learned of the honors. They knew that Macbeth would become king before Macbeth may have considered that prospect.

It is not that difficult to write down the ingredients of the potion (see below) but it is difficult to know what its purpose is. Some productions have Macbeth drink it, others have the witches smear it on his body, and yet others show the apparitions being seen in the steam that rises from it.

Do you want the recipe?

In a cauldron, add poisoned entrails, a toad that has lived for a month under a stone, venom taken from a sleeping snake, snake fillet, newt's eye, frog's toe, bat's wool, dog's tongue, snake's tongue, sting of a "blind-worm", lizard's leg and wing of a young owl, dragon's scale, wolf's tooth, dessicated remains of a dead witch, mouth and throat of a shark, hemlock root (best if harvested at night), Jew's liver, goat's gall bladder, yew leaves (best if harvested during a lunar eclipse), Turk's nose, lips of someone from eastern Russia, finger of a baby murdered by her prostitute mother and the intestines of a tiger. Cool with the blood of a baboon.

For an interesting and little used variation, add bat's blood, a grain of leopard's bane, toad juice, adder oil and 3 oz. of red-headed girl.

Just before serving, garnish with the blood of a female pig that has eaten nine of her own piglets, and flambe grease from a rope used to hang murderers.
