Prawn-Shrimp : Differences

  • Generally, shrimp are smaller than prawns, though there are always exceptions.
  • Shrimp's legs are shorter than prawns and they have claws only on two pairs of legs, compared to prawns which have claws on three pairs of legs, which are longer.
  • Whilst prawns and shrimp are both crustaceans, prawns belong to the Dendrobranchiata suborder and Shrimp belong to the Pleocyemata suborder.
  • Prawns have lamellar gills while Shrimp have branching gills.
  • The front pincers on shrimp are bigger while prawns have bigger second pincers.
  • Prawns are semi-transparent as their internal organs are visible through the skin. Shrimp are usually pigmented.
  • Prawns lay their eggs while Shrimp carry their eggs during the entire breeding season.
  • Prawns have a segmented body, compared to the comparatively flatter body of shrimp.
  • Shrimp are most often seen in the United States or Latin American countries But prawns are more common in Asian and Australian waters.
  • Prawns have a stronger and more aromatic flavor and smell than shrimp.

"Scampi" means several different things.

First, it's the (Italian) plural of "scampo", the Italian name for a particular type of lobster. However, it's sometimes used for other similar creatures, including, sometimes, shrimp.

Second, it's a type of dish prepared from those lobsters using garlic, butter, and white wine. However, you can prepare shrimp or prawns (or chicken or beef for that matter) that way if you wanted to.
