What kind of diseases do puppy mills have?

The conditions in a puppy mill is awful. Small wired cages are stacked on top of each other holding about 5 dogs in one tiny size cages. The dog's paws are swollen from trying to pull their paws free. Some dogs are missing their paws from chewing their paws off to be free. This happens because there isn't a solid flooring. Plus since the cages are stacked on top of each other all of their droppings fall onto an other dog that is underneath and it collects on the bottom and leaves an bad smelling stench. The law says to own a puppy mill the dogs must have a roof over their heads to protect them from the bad weather, food and water. So the owners don't give them the best food and water. The dog food their doesn't have much vitamins or the things they need to have a healthy dog. Another thing is dogs there are in bad conditions. They are covered in cuts and bite marks. They have cuts from scratching bites from fleas and ticks. They have bites from the other dogs that bite when the other dogs get in the way or from fitting over the food. Puppy mills can have many diseases and they would vary by the geographical area and by the individual mill. Here are a few common diseases of dogs kept in close quarters.

Kennel cough: a viral disease with no medical cure. The dog will experience fatigue, coughing and sometimes damage to the trachea. Kennel cough does, however, have a vaccine. While it isn't 100% effective it does a fair job in protecting animals.

Worms: one of a variety of species of parasites that dogs contract from each other.

Mange: a group of skin diseases caused by mites that bury themselves under the skin. Dogs can become unbearably itchy and can have hair loss.

Fleas: will occur in some areas and not in others based on climate. Can be a serious issue in some areas. Fleas can also carry other diseases including typhus and even the Bubonic Plague in limited areas of the world.

The prevalence of these diseases are magnified by immune problems (caused by stress and malnourishment). Genetic problems due to inbreeding may also be a concern if the kennel is breeding purebred animals.

There are millions of dogs being bred in terrible conditions and living as strays throughout the world. To avoid supporting puppy mills, I encourage people to change a life and adopt dogs from shelters in their area and in places like Mexico where lovely dogs can live terrible, short and desperate lives.
