What diseases can be treated using penicillin?

Sir Alexander Fleming was working in his lab. He noticed that bacteria did not grow around the stale bread inhabited by fungi in 1928. ( There was a clear zone around the fugal colonies.) He wrote that fungi must be producing some chemical in order to stop the growth of bacteria. This finding was unnoticed till World War 2. Then in 1939 Dr. Florey and Chain decided to try the chemical penicillin on a serious patient with war injuries admitted in London hospital. They had no idea about the dose and decided to give 5000 I. U. to the patient. ( You give up to 24 million I.U.in meningitis/day.) The patient showed definite improvement. Every day morning young and dynamic Chain used to go to the hospital to collect the urine of the patient on his bicycle. So that penicillin excreted can be retrieved. Unfortunately the stock of penicillin was exhausted and the patient died subsequently. Millions of patients got cured after that because of penicillin. Dr. Florey and Chain received Nobel prize for Physiology or medicine.
