The leopard is very rare in northern Africa. Only a small population persists in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The species has a very thick coat of fur, as compared to other leopards, that suits its cold mountain habitat. It preys on Barbary apes, antelopes and some small animals. As with most other animal species, the encroachment of human into the leopards territory has threatened the leopards food sources and habitat and on occasions the leopards themselves are killed.
Some of the animals that live in the Atlas Mountains include Barbary macaques, Barbary leopards, Atlas bears (now extinct), and various species of birds like the Barbary falcon and the Atlas cedar. These animals have adapted to the mountainous terrain and harsh climate of the Atlas Mountains.
