Cats are carnivores, so they need fresh meat. They only need 3-5% carbohydrates (which would come from a prey's stomach), but the rest they get all their nutrition from meat, organs and bone.

In general, the best cat foods are the ones with a very high, named-meat content. They should be labeled by source, such as: Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit, Lamb, Tuna, etc., as the first, or second ingredient. Cats need the majority of their nutrients from meat-based proteins and fats.

The amount of moisture in cat food is also very important, if not one of the most important part of a cat's diet. Dry food contains no moisture, so is quite dehydrating. Cats are notoriously bad drinkers, even when they are thirsty. This is because they have evolved to get all their needed moisture from their prey (their ancestors were cats that lived in very dry and arid environments where water was hard to come by), so therefore have a low "thirst drive" and will not often seek out water on their own. This is a trait that has been passed down over the thousands of years.

Canned or pouched food has anywhere between 60 to 80% water. Seeing as in the wild a cat's prey is around 65%-75% water, wet food provides a cat with more than enough water each day.

Like a list of cat supplies? Well, if so here goes a list. These supplies can be found at Petco, Petsmart, Wal-mart or even at home!

Food- Ha, you knew that. Make sure it's a good. If it's a kitten, get kitten food, or adult food. Also check with the owner or shelter to see what food they were previously eating. Change gradually over time.

Food and Water Bowls: You can buy some, or you can use some old bowls. Always have water in a bowl.

Litter Box: Don't use cardboard; it will be a huge mess. Make sure it's big enough but not too big too where a kitten can't get in.

Litter: Get NON CLUMPING litter for kittens, in case they eat it. Clumping should be fine with adult cats.

Scooper: A small hand shovel could do.

Cat bed: You can buy one, or use a pillow, get a box, put some blankets. There may be one at a yard sale to.

Collar and tag: You could get this, but don't get something with bells or something that could fall off and be swallowed.

Scratching post: If it is an indoor cat (hopefully) Then you'll need this so the won't scratch furniture. You can buy the expensive kind at Wal-mart for about 20 dollars. Or you could make one. Just get some flat board, and cut them. Get a cylinder like post and nail them. But some scratch carpet on them. You can get on You Tube or just scan on the internet for better instructions.

Toys: Not necessary, but good to have. You can even make some yourself. Just make sure the toy has nothing that can fall off and be swallowed. If so, make sure the cat is supervised while playing with it.

Brush: Depends on coat.

Pet carrier: Make sure it's durable and big enough.

Vet bills: Ha-ha. There's the real money taker.

Love, care, attention and a responsible, hard-working owner!! Which I'm sure he/she will have: ) Good luck; they are a bundle of joy!!!

I'd say cat bowls, cat food, a litter box, and cat litter. Also the cat should have a place to sleep, you don't need to buy a cat bed unless there is nowhere the cat can sleep. Also if the cat is a kitten you should get at least 1 toy to entertain the kitten.
