While statistics like grades, GPA, and standardized test scores are still very important to colleges today, many universities are taking a more wholistic approach--they are interested in the entire package of the student. A college wants to see leadership positions, consistency (that you've stuck with clubs and activities for long periods of time and succeeded in them), and community service. In addition, they want to know if your personality and values will make a good addition to their particular institution. If you are applying to Claremont McKenna College in California, for example, you would want to emphasize that you are an effective leader, because that is one of the qualities they nurture most closely there. Most importantly, don't worry about trying to create an application that will please colleges; create an application that accurately reflects who you are and what you have done. This way, not only will the university get what it wants, but you will be accepted to universities that know you will succeed there.

When applying to most colleges or Universities, the applications require grades, and participation in school and community events. If your participation is in the school or community, most schools require you to have been in the group or activity for more than one year so that they know that you are able to continue with doing things and are able to stick to completing things. If you skip around with different activities, then they may think that you aren't responsible enough or that you just aren't certain still about what you want to major in when you start college.

Colleges want to know as much about your as there is to know.  They want to be impressed so that they can be sure they are making the right decision.  The more they know, the better chances for a scholarship and other things.  However, don't elaborate or brag too much, just mention everything that you are involved with.

Mention any activities that you do or have done in school, clubs, teams, events.

Mention volunteer activities, if any.

Mention your grades, class rank.

Why you want go to their school and why you would be an asset to them.

Mention anything you do outside of school.  If you have a job or other responsibilities.

The more you mention, the more responsible you seem.  But again, do not take it too far as they will get bored since there is another 100 people like you.
