There are two breeds of Cyclopes in Greek myth. The first and by far oldest were the three sons of Ouranos and Gaia, named Brontes, Steropes and Arges (Thunder, Lightning, and Brightness). Their father hated their hideous appearance and had them bound in Tartartus with the Hecantochires, or Hundred Handed Ones. After Zeus freed them to help with his uprising on Olympus, they agreed to forge for him, and they moved to Mt. Aetna, where their forge was built in the heart of the mountain. They forged many of the wonderous weapons and tools of the gods, including Zeus' thunderbolts.
The second breed of Cyclopes were sons of Poseidon. They were giant creatures whose myth was likely inspired by the discovery of ancient elephant skulls. Cyclops means "round eye" and the large nasal opening in the middle of the large skull would make it seem like an eye rather than a nose. The most famous of that breed was the cyclops who imprisoned Odysseus and his men.
