Usually the matriarch (lead female) will charge any enemies that threaten young or baby elephants in the same herd. Most of the the time the charges are just warnings and don't actually come in contact with the predator, but if the predator persists, than the female will really charge and injure or kill the animal; this is especially common when elephants are laying there eggs and they become very protective.
When out on the open plain, and a threat comes upon a herd of Elephants, they immediately take action. The young, the sick, the elderly - are all herded into the middle of a circle. The other bigger Elephants then stand shoulder to shoulder, facing outward toward the threat. The Lions (usually the threats) will circle the herd, snarling and at times leaping at the Elephants. The tactic of the Lion is to so intimidate even just ONE Elephant -that they will break rank and run. Once that happens, those in the middle which are easy prey are suddenly vulnerable. The standoff comes about when the Lion realizes that if it gets too close to the outward facing Elephants, they will be squished like a bug. So it is a matter of stamina, intimidation - and standing your ground. Most of the time, the Lions will become weary of the fruitless efforts, and wander away. So it is critical that the herd stick together - shoulder to shoulder - in order to survive and protect the sick, the elderly and the young. Randy Kanipe B.S., M.Div., Th.M., Ed.D.
