Monocytes are the largest leukocytes., essential in the body's defense against viruses and certain extracellular bacterial parasites. They can be identified by their pale blue cytoplasm as well as their dark purple-staining and U or kidney-shaped nuclei. Monocytes can differentiate into highly mobile macrophages once they are migrating in the tissue.
