If the object is heated it will expand because the particles gain energy from the heat and move about more vigorously causing them to bump into each other and move further and further apart. When the substance is cooled (gets cold) the particles slow down and move closer and closer together causing the object to contract.

Use the particle theory to explain the expansion and contraction of a solid when temperature is changed?

The expansion and contraction using particles is when a liquid melts because the particles get more energy and move around so making the substance appear less then there is and when the particles cool down they loose energy and move around slower so making them appear bigger than when they were warmer.

How do particles in a sound wave move?

The move by expansion and Contraction of the medium by which they are propagated. It is transmitted in air as a longitudinal wave- which means its direction is in line with the movement of the medium.
