Water turtles will most likely bite, and hard sometimes!!! I wouldn't reccamend a swimming turtle to somebody with small children who will want to hold them because the turtle will not approve. Swimming turtles are adorable to watch, though, and for somebody who doesn't mind leaving them in their tank most of the time, they make excelent pets!!
Box turtles are far less likely to bite, and are way more tolerant for children judging by my experience with them. Just don't touch their heads!!!

Pet turtles are good pets to learn how to care for something. You need to learn the importance of watering and feeding and cleaning the turtles house. They tend to have a really bad odor and will make your room smell like turtles. They won't play fetch, or roll over or speak. You can take them for a walk but don't plan on leaving the yard and don't be in a hurry. They will not curl up to you or lick your face or show any affection when you come home from school or work. They will poo where ever they want.

Well, softshell turtles can eat small fish or insects in the water, but babies can't always eat those. You could try getting some food from a pet store if you have one as a pet, but you could also chop up small things on the water too that they possibly eat.
