"Southern Methodists" is an inaccurate term. During the Civil War there existed a Methodist Episcopal Church, South, due to the Church's split over slavery. This church has since re-united and had several other mergers to now exist as The United Methodist Church.

Briefly, United Methodism believes that both infants and adults can be Baptized. The method used to Baptize can be by sprinkling, pouring, or immersion. Baptism is a one-time thing. Baptisms from other Christian denominations are accepted without re-Baptism. Re-Baptism is not allowed. Baptism is a Sacrament - a sign-act. As such, it is an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.

Theologically, much goes on in Baptism. God is present. God's grace (freely given love) is imparted to the individual. The individual is welcomed into the Body of Christ, the church.

The United Methodist Church's official statement on Baptism is called "By Water and The Spirit," which can be found here: http://www.gbod.org/worship/articles/water_spirit/

Southern Baptists believe that baptism is an outward demonstration of what has already taken place inside. It is not necessary for salvation. Following Jesus in the act of baptism shows how a child of God humbles himself to his maker and has a rebirth of water and spirit.

Jesus Christ is the son of God, born of a virgin, who was put to death on the cross and rose again on the 3rd day. He and he alone is your path to salvation. You cannot loose that salvation once you accept Jesus Christ as your personnel savior. You should be baptized into a local Baptist church but it is not necessary for salvation. Baptism is by immersion in water and not by sprinkling. You are saved by the Grace of God and not of any works you may do. Jesus is alive and will come again to take his believers to heaven. The dead will rise again to be with the Lord in heaven. Heaven and hell are real places. Hell is the abode of Satan who is a fallen angel. All evil comes from Satan. We are born a sinner and without salvation we will forever be separated from God. These are the basic beliefs and one verse in the Holy Bible sums up the Baptist belief. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life".

Who do Baptists baptise?

Baptists believe in baptism, but only for adults. They also don't believe that baptism saves -- they say that baptism is symbolic of the commitment a person has made to God (and therefore Christ) to follow Him. Therefore, since they believe that only adults can make such a commitment, they do not allow babies or young children to be baptized and require adults who convert from other churches to be rebaptized (or baptized for real, from their point of view). You should understand that while Catholics, Lutherans, and other sacramental Christians view baptism as part of God's grace, Baptists view baptism as a work of faith. Since they view baptism as a work, it therefore cannot save, despite the words of Jesus (Mark 16:16) and St. Peter (I Peter 3:21). Finally, Baptists believe that infants cannot have faith until their minds are developed to understand the teachings of Scripture, despite the words of Jesus (Mark 9:42). Therefore, they teach that children are saved apart from faith (the actual mechanism is disputed) until they are capable of faith.

What are the differences between Episcopalian and Baptist?

Episcopalians are part of the Anglican Communion and have a hierarchical structure with bishops, while Baptists are autonomous and congregationalist with no central authority. Episcopalians practice infant baptism and believe in sacraments, while Baptists practice believer's baptism and focus on the symbolic nature of ordinances. Episcopalians also tend to have a more liturgical worship style compared to Baptists.

Does a Protestant church have baptism pools?

Yes. The Baptists have a tub for immersion. Churches that only sprinkle have fonts of water.

What comes first belief or baptism?

It depends on your branch of Christianity. The Roman Catholics, for example, baptize children as an infant so they have no choice but to be Christian. Other branches, such as the Baptists, let the child choose to believe before they baptize.
