There are many types of termites that call United States home.
In the northeast area of the county the two most popular are Drywood Termites and Eastern Subterranean Termites.
Drywood Termites
* 3/8"-5/8", yellow/brownish. One wing. * These eat across the grain, eating all the wood, unlike subterranean termites. These termites usually are found in small amounts, but if not fully treated, the new infestations can cause serious damage. * Drywood Termites typically live in dry wood(low levels of moisture). Usually found in sub tropical areas, several species in the southwest. Colonies are found inside the wood. Eastern Subterranean Termites
* Underground, they enter wood structures through small cracks, some lees then 1/16". However, if moisture is available these creatures can survive without being underground., 3/8", dark-brown/ blackish. Wings are long and can be milky/ transparent.
Bugs that look like termites with wings are likely to have a similar body shape and size to termites, with a distinct waist and straight antennae. They may also have wings that are longer than their bodies and be a light brown or black color. These bugs are often mistaken for termites, but they are actually flying ants, which are a different species.
Termites are actually more similar to cockroaches than ants. However, termites and ants may seem similar due to their body structure and antennae. Ants are less destructive than termites.
Yes they do look similar only a lot smaller and the big thing that should tip you off to the difference is that termites eat wood and a maggot will be on a dead animal.
Termite tunnels look very similar to the tunnels of ants seen in ant farms. This is because both insects have similar tunneling methods.
Termites are small insects with soft bodies, straight antennae, and a pale color. They have six legs and are usually about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. Termites have a distinct appearance with a straight waist and a thick, straight body. They may look similar to ants, but termites have a more uniform body shape and lack the distinct waist that ants have.
Termites love dead wood, so it would already be rotting. You would see little lines down the wood and maybe holes into it. Much like ants in a log, just smaller.
Termites get food from hunting fir it. Termites like to eat wood. You can find termites in forests and even in a home that is made out of wood.
Termites in California are typically small, pale insects with soft bodies and straight antennae. They have six legs and are often mistaken for ants, but termites have a thicker waist and straight antennae, while ants have a pinched waist and elbowed antennae.

Signs of termites that homeowners should look out for include mud tubes on walls or foundation, hollow-sounding wood, discarded wings near windows or doors, and the presence of sawdust-like droppings called frass.
One detects termites having eaten wood along the foundation of their home by the crumbling apart of wood and little white insect larve called termites. Termites when mature look like ants with wings. They will be living under that rotten wood when you pull it apart from the foundation.
