The 613 Commandments in the Jewish Bible.
There are no beads on a Tallit or Jewish prayer shawl. There are knots and strings called Tzitzit on each corner that represent the 613 commandments found in the Torah.
It's not the five knots on their own that are symbolic of anything. Depending on the tradition one follows, there is different numerical significance to the fringes. According to Rashi, it's the combination of: the 5 knots, 8 strings, and the numerical value of the Hebrew word 'tzitzit' which is 600. The combined value is 613 which is the number of mitzvot (guidelines) found in the Torah.
613.
It's the Hebrew word for the Jewish prayer shawl or Tallis. The fringes on the ends of the Tallit signify the 613 Commandments of the Torah. The wearing of the Tallit (or Tallis) stems from a law in the Bible commanding Jews to put fringes on the corners of their garments.
First of all, the term fringes is a bit misleading since a tallit almost always has a decorative fringe along the two sides. A better term is tassels, which are tied to all four corners of the tallit. They are called tzitzit (or tzitzis or tsitsit or tsitsis) and they are the tallit's raison d'etre. Tzitzits are a biblical requirement for Jewish men when wearing a four-cornered garment. Since four-cornered garments are rarely worn today, Orthodox Jews have a custom of wearing a tallit during prayer and a special garment under (sometimes over) their shirt throughout the day in order to surround themselves with tzitzits. The reason for the commandment of tzitzits is to serve as a constant reminder of the 613 mitzvahs (biblical commandments).
The tallit is a shawl traditionally made of wool (though other materials can be used, a mixture of wool and linen - prohibited in the Torah - is never used) with tasseled fringes known as tzitzit (traditionally, there are 613 tassels - a reminder of the 613 Mitzvot or commandments found in the Torah). It is worn by male Jews during the Shacharit morning prayers and Shabbat (Sabbath) and religious holiday prayers. In modern times, some women have also adopted the wearing of the tallit, especially those who are members of Liberal or Progressive synagogues or feminist Jewish organisations.
