Over the past years the term "weekend" has lost a little bit of its meaning as more and more Germans have had to work on Saturday, too. Mostly everything (shops, cinemas, ...) is closed on Sunday, though.
I, a German student, still enjoy a regular weekend and cannot speak for every German but we actually love to use Friday and Saturday night to go out. The younger tend to get together somewhere (bars, movies, clubs, sb's home...) and have fun. As drinking is legal from 16+, a Friday/ Saturday night is usually accompanied by beer/wine/... . But not as the main component. In the summertime you will see lots of young Germans out in the parks chatting and drinking. It's cheaper than bars.
"Elderly" people love to go out just as well to clubs/bars/... . Famlies sometimes use the chance of being together to go for a day trip somewhere.
Most people will just as well use their weekends to relax, sleep and watch TV. Going to chruch on Sunday is not as common as it is in the States.
There is no ONE thing that we Germans do on our weekends, if we have one. The variety of things might be just as huge as it is somewhere else.
Germans often enjoy spending time outdoors, visiting parks, hiking, or cycling. Many also like to go out for meals at traditional restaurants or cafes, attend cultural events such as concerts or museums, or simply relax with family and friends. Additionally, weekends are a popular time for Germans to participate in recreational activities or pursue hobbies.
