What do the arrows in a food web explain?

The arrows in a food web represent the flow of energy through the web, further along the arrows/web means that less energy is moving along. The energy flows through arrow to the next consumer, the energy moving through the arrows have less and less energy as the web moves on.

The arrows indicate what in the chain/web is eaten and by whom; the base of the arrow represents the eaten, and the point represents the eater.

Example: If you created a food web with the following organisms (grass, mice, foxes, cougars) and then the Sun, you would start with an arrow pointing from the Sun up to the grass because the grass 'eats' the Sun, harnesses its energy for photosynthesis. Mice eat the grass (I assume~) and so the arrow would be pointing up from the grass to the mice. and so forth.

The arrow points in the direction that energy is travled. For example if a hawk was to eat a rabbit the hawk would be gaining the energy in which case the arrow would point in it's direction.
