The stele that is between the paws records a dream Tuthmosis IV had when he was a prince. He dreamt that he stopped to rest in the shadow of the Sphinx during a hunting expedition in the desert. While asleep, the Sphinx spoke to him, saying that he would become king if he cleared away the sand that all but buried the Sphinx. When he became king, Tuthmosis IV cleared the sand and erected a stele that tells the story of his dream. After the work was completed, a chapel was built next to the Sphinx to venerate this sun god.

The word sphinx is not ancient Egyptian but Greek; it was used by Greek visitors who wrote about what they saw in Egypt (without really understanding much of it). So the word "sphinx" would not be written in hieroglyphs.

Instead the native word was used - this is written with signs that spell s+s+p+w, sspw, or sometimes sh+s+p+w, Shspw. The vowels were not written so we can never know how the word was said. This word is closely related to the ancient Egyptian word for a statue or image: sh+s+p, shsp.

See link below for an image of the ancient Egyptian word for sphinx, which is written out with the last 4 signs on the last row (the final sign is a determinative and simply serves to clarify the meaning of the word:

What do the hieroglyphics mean on nabooti?

There are four hieroglyphics at the entrance to the Sphinx at Giza. It is uncertain what they actually "mean", but they indicate the order in which you are to climb the falling blocks. The Falling Blocks in the Sphinx You can only jump to one specific block on each of the 4 levels of blocks. There are four hieroglyphics in the Sphinx entryway. Remember the 4 symbols in ascending order (man, wavy sea, bird, eye) and jump on only those blocks, one block in each row. That is, only the big-head man in the first row, only the wavy sea in the second, only the bird on the third, only the eye on the fourth. When you reach the top, jump quickly to the rope. DO NOT JUMP ON THE STONES UNTIL YOU ARE SURE YOU WANT TO JUMP, FOR AS SOON AS YOUR FEET LEAVE, THEY WILL FALL.
