J.K. Rowling's initials stand for Joanne Kathleen. She originally published under the pen name J.K. Rowling to appeal to a gender-neutral audience as she was advised that a book written by a female author might not appeal to the target audience of young boys for her Harry Potter series.
Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Kathleen is not really her middle name she never had one but when publishing the first Harry Potter book her publisher thought males would not wish to read a book written by a woman so she used the name of some one in her family.
She used these initials because her editor believed that "J.K." would appeal to male readers more than "Joanne Kathleen" would.
