Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and on this day Lord Ram had returned to his kingdom after defeating Ravana. People light up their homes to represent the returning of Lord Ram, and of goodness. Fireworks and diyas (candles) are lit up. People exchange gifts along with sweets and visit each others homes. Pooja (prayer) of Lord Rama and other Hindu Gods also takes place on this auspicious day.
