Whooping Cranes eat a wide variety of prey, even the season influences what they eat to a large extent. When they are preparing for their migration, and nesting season, the Whooping Crane will concentrate on Blue Crabs if available, eating as much as possible. They are an excellent source of protein, and fat, and both are what the Whooping Crane needs plenty of for the long flight, and their nesting season. I have read that the population of whooping cranes in 1941 was anywhere from 15 to 21. At this point, they were coming close to extinction.
