Depending on the plant species and the pH, a surprisingly large number of pigments may appear as red. The following, therefore, is not a full list. The first that comes to mind is lycopene, a carotenoid, that gives tomatoes their color. Carotene, a similar molecule, is red-orange. Anthocyanins can be purple or green, but may also be red given the right pH (acidic). Betacyanins are an alternative group of pigments with similar function and color to anthocyanins. Finally - though algae are no longer considered proper plants - red algae get their color from phyoerythrocyanin pigments.

There may be others that I skipped or am unaware of.

It is the presence of the pigment melanin that is responsible for yellow coloring in butterflies (Lepidopteraorder).Specifically, the activation of melanin results in brown or yellow coloring in butterflies. Other colors are due to the predominant presence of other pigments. For example, anthocyanin is responsible for blue, purple or red. As is the case with plants, chlorophyll is responsible for green-colored butterflies.
