If you really have a swarm of bees -- a football-sized cluster of bees hanging from a tree branch or something similar -- the best thing to do is contact a local beekeeper who will be glad to come and collect them. If you do nothing, they will be there anything between a couple of hours and a day then will move on, either to another post, or to a new home. Bees in a swarm are usually quite docile because they have no hive to protect and they fed well before they left their old hive. However, it is better not to disturb the swarm in any way.

Run in a straight line directly away from the nest. Other than that or having a smoke machine handy, it's all you can do. Jumping into water is not a good idea, as the bees will just for you to surface and attack when you do.

Run is a good idea.

Normal bees will only attack you if you have annoyed them, or perhaps you are wearing strong perfume or scent and you have walked through their landing zone near the hive.

Cover your face with your clothes and get away as quick as you can. If you have been stung, the bee stings will be left in your skin (bee stings have a hook, so the bee dies after stinging), and will still be pumping in the poison. Don't try to pull them out, that just squeezes the little sac of poison. Instead, scrape them off with your fingernails, or a knife.

Another trick, if you are near a suitable hedge or group of trees (especially fir), squeeze through between the bushes -- the bees usually won't, or can't, follow you.

If you are stung by a honey bee you should first look to make sure the stinger is out. If the stinger is still in you should use a flat edge hard object such as a credit card to scrap the stinger away. You can run cold water over the area for a few minutes. Apply a topical antihistamine. If there is an allergic reaction administer Benadryl and go to a health care center immediately.

Is it there was a swarm of bees or there were a swarm of bees?

"Swarm" is a collective noun and takes a singular verb. Although many bees make a swarm, it is meant to be taken as one whole. The correct sentence is, "There was a swarm of bees (chasing me)." The sentence could be rearranged to read, "A swarm of bees was chasing me." See the related link for subject/verb agreement rules. Rules 3, 4, and 18 address this question.
