If someone you know is having any type of mental crisis, the first thing to do is to be sure that they are not in danger of hurting themselves or another person. If you speak with them, and they are suicidal, or homicidal (want to kill or hurt another person), please call 911.
However, if they are having a nervous breakdown, the next thing you should do is be supportive and try to offer them options. One option is to see their family doctor for an immediate diagnosis. They can then direct the person to a mental health clinic or facility if needed.
If there is ever a question though that a person having a mental breakdown may hurt themselves, or others, please call 911 for them to get immediate help.
