Or you could try, y'know, just generally watching the road and the other cars on it and (this is the key part) not running into any of them.

Under the assumption that there's some kind of serious question buried deeply beneath the obvious here, it's usually suggested that you turn in a specific direction (if someone is coming at you head on and you turn left and he turns right, you're still going to hit each other). In the US, that direction is right; I don't know if it's different in other countries, though it would make sense for the direction to be "towards the side you're supposed to be driving on" since the alternative is "towards the side where oncoming traffic is supposed to be."
