They make a police report so that if it is used in a crime after that day and time then they can see that it wasn't you, as far as getting re-imbursed, do you have renter's insurance? It may be covered.
The first thing to do is to report it stolen. You'll need to know the make, model, caliber, serial number, and general description. Then you will want to make sure that it gets reported to the local and state police and the FBI/BATFE.
If the firearm is ever recovered, those steps make it much more likely that someone will contact you to let you know it was recovered. However, this does not mean you will automatically get your firearm returned to you. It may be evidence in a crime, in which case it may be retained in evidence at least until the investigation and any trials are over, which could take years. Even after any trials, you may have to hired a lawyer to petition the court for the return of your property.

Contact your local police department and give them the serial number. The Police can check on the stolen gun list maintained by the BATFE. If the gun is stolen, the Police will conficate the piece and begin investigation of how it was acquired.
Contact the police.
Expect the police to expect YOU to explain how you came to possess a gun that had been stolen- just like any other property.
