Horizontal transmission is essentially spread between hosts generally in a population- eg influenza. It can be direct (contact) airborne, foodborne, via contamination of the environment or water or indirect via a biological agent acting as a vector, such as a mosquito and yellow fever virus. Vertical transmission is spread between generations- meaning in particular from mother to child either in the womb (eg rubella), by blood at time of birth (eg herpes) or through milk soon after birth (eg HTLV-1).
