First, you should love cooking. I don't think it is complusary if your just after the job is all, but some people tend to start enjoying cooking once they are into it, which is more than enough

You need a high school diploma, first of all. It would help if you took home economics or cooking, if your school offers this.

It's also good if you've worked as a busboy or -girl or a waiter or cashier in a restaurant. And you should spend time making increasingly difficult dishes for your family or friends.

Then you should get an associate's degree or certificate in culinary arts--which covers all the necessary subjects to become a chef. After this, you might apprentice or work as a line chef or sous-chef, and build up your experience and expertise over a few years until you are a full chef.

If you want to eventually run your own restaurant, a bachelor's degree in hospitality (hotel and restaurant management) would be very helpful, which includes coursework in business, finance, etc.

Avoid going into debt to get these degrees. Chef salaries are not usually high enough to pay off school debt very fast.
