History is about the past. History helps us to understand the world today. We learn how our government, our laws and our way of life began. It teaches us many things about the world we live in. Perhaps we can make the world a better place to live in.

First of all, prepare to do a lot of reading. Most of Earth's history happened before human beings invented things like cameras, recorders, and video equipment! .

When studying history, you need to have a plan - what exactly does the teacher want you to learn in this section of the book, or in this period of history, or from this example of a historical event? There is just too much information which has gone on for you to try to memorize everything that ever happened!

Once you have an idea on what topic you need to focus on, read the text for information which will help you to understand that topic. Notice anything in bold-face type, or anything which has an illustration, map, or diagram to help explain it. Write notes in your notebook about what you feel is important so that you won't have to keep reading over the text.

Try to relate what you are learning to your own life. How are things different now than they were in those days? What things would you do if you lived in those times? What could you say to a person from that time if they came to your time? How does knowledge that was learned in that time help you in the modern world?

If your teacher wants you to memorize a list of dates, important people, events, or other series of items, try using a memory trick to help you out - see the Related Questions for more help with memorizing.
