There are many different gases with many different uses.

  • Oxygen gas is obviously useful, as humans (and many other organisms) need it in order to perform cellular respiration to survive. Oxygen is also used in welding.
  • Nitrogen gas is used in fire suppression
  • Helium gas is used to fill balloons to make them float
  • Carbon dioxide gas is used to carbonate soda and other beverages
  • Nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) is used for anesthesia
  • Natural gas such as methane is used as fuel to generate electricity

Obviously this is just a sampling of gases and their uses, not a comprehensive list.
