In King James language, another meaning of the word "suffer" was to bear with, or as we would say, "put up with." "Longsuffering," then (all one word, not two), means to bear with for an extended time; in other words, primarily it means patience, or to be patient.

Variations in its biblical meaning include endurance, steadfastness, constancy, forbearance and perseverance. The intended meaning can be determined by context.

Long suffering is a special quality mentioned in The Bible that represents patience and endurance.

When someone is long-suffering, they will put up with someone or something or being somewhere because they have a deep love for that individual and are hopeful that they will see positive results as an outcome.

For example, a mother will put up with a lot for the long term benefit of her children. Her love for her child is what motivates her patience with a child that is chronically difficult or troublesome. Parenting alone is a demonstration of long suffering because it takes a great deal of patience and discernment for a parent to really instill proper training in their children for them to grow into responsible adults.

Another example is of God himself. When you read the pages of the Bible, you will see that many many times, the Israelite nation was not loyal to God. Yet time and time again, he gave them chances to return to a privileged relationship with Him.

Long-suffering is a quality that the Bible endears.

Here are some scriptures that mention long-suffering:

Romans 9:22 If, now, God, although having the will to demonstrate his wrath and to make his power known, tolerated with much long-suffering vessels of wrath made fit for destruction,1 Corinthians 13:4 Love*+ is long-suffering+ and kind.+ Love is not jealous,+ it does not brag,+ does not get puffed up,+1 Thessalonians 5:14 On the other hand, we exhort YOU, brothers, admonish the disorderly,+ speak consolingly to the depressed souls,+support the weak, be long-suffering+ toward all.

2 Timothy 4:2 preach the word,+ be at it urgently in favorable season,+ in troublesome season,+ reprove,+ reprimand,* exhort, with all long-suffering+ and [art of] teaching.

Romans 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of his kindness+ and forbearance+ and long-suffering,+ because you do not know that the kindly [quality] of God is trying to lead you to repentance?

Galatians 5:22 On the other hand, the fruitage+ of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith,

Ephesians 4:2 with complete lowliness of mind+ and mildness, with long-suffering,+ putting up with one another in love,

Colossians 3:12 Accordingly, as God's chosen ones,+ holy and loved, clothe yourselves with the tender affections of compassion,+kindness, lowliness of mind,*+ mildness,+ and long-suffering.
