Assuming you refer to phases of the Moon, New Moon is when the whole disc is unlit, the first quarter is when one half of the disc is illuminated.
As to whether it is the left half or the right half, depends upon which hemisphere of earth you are in. The folk in the opposite hemisphere see the Moon as if they were 'standing on their head', thus the illuminated half differs.
