"R" is the signature of the maker. The "925" reflects the amount of silver it contains. Silver is a precious metal that is usually mixed with copper, for example. The silver is .925 in amount + .075 whatever the other metal is, like copper.
Anything with .925 parts silver & above is considered "sterling" silver.
There are European silver items that are marked "800". That just means that there is more of the other metal mixed in, "200". This is not sterling.
