When Odysseus returns to Ithaca from his voyage at sea, he is disguised as a beggar and lives with Eumaeus, the swineherd. Odysseus then must win the contest of strining a bow and shooting an arrow through axe-heads that Penelope set up. After he has done this, he must battle his wife's suitors and reclaim his spot as king.
Odysseus was the King of Ithaca, an independent island kingdom in what is now Greece.

I know that she is a goddess but I am guessing because he needed to know who his mentor was.
Athena transforms him into an old man, and he goes into hiding. When he finds out about the men in his house wishing to marry Penelope (the Suitors), his wife, he and his son make a plan and eventually kill them. Some of the citizens now rise against Odysseus because he killed the Suitors (their family), but Athena intervenes and persuades both sides to give up the fighting.
The line "I swear Odysseus is on native soil here and now" is spoken by the character Telemachus in Homer's epic poem, "The Odyssey." Telemachus expresses this sentiment during his search for news of his father, Odysseus, who has been absent for many years. His statement reflects his deep hope and belief that Odysseus has returned to Ithaca, highlighting the themes of loyalty and the longing for family.

Athena instructs Odysseus that he must tell Telemachus his story. She said to Odysseus: "High-born son of Laertes, ready Odysseus, tell now your story to your son. Hide it no longer. Then having planned the suitors' death and doom, go forward both of you into the famous city. And I myself will not be far away, for I am eager for the combat."
Odysseus was king of Ithaca. Ithaca is a small island off the western coast of Greece, of which it is now a part.

The Gods aren't for or against Odysseus. The majority of them couldn't care less whether he lived or died. It was Poseidon that hated him and tried everything he could to delay his journey home and kill him, and it was Athena who was helping him.
In "The Odyssey," Argos is Odysseus's faithful dog, symbolizing loyalty and the passage of time. When Odysseus finally returns home after twenty years, he finds Argos, now old and neglected, yet still recognizing his master. Argos's condition reflects the decay of Ithaca in Odysseus's absence, emphasizing themes of fidelity and the impact of time on relationships. His death shortly after seeing Odysseus underscores the bittersweet nature of reunion.
Yes, he's married to Penelope. Odysseus and Penelope have a son, Telemachus. Odysseus tells Penelope, "You must promise me, if I don't come back by the time Telemachus has a beard, you must marry." Penelope promises. Odysseus, still alive after 20 years, comes back to Ithaca to find suitors (men who are trying to marry Penelope) all over his home. Penelope knew he was still alive after 20 years, but people kept telling her he was dead. Suitors are very mean. Athena discuises Odysseus as an old beggar, and he, and telemachus go to their house. Penelope doesn't know it's odyssus. she tells Odysseus (the "beggar") that he still loves Odysseus and promised that she'd marry when telemachus had a beard. he had a beard now. so she held a contest to pick a husband. the contest was to string Odysseus's box & shoot an arrow through 12 ax handles. all the suitors failed to string the bow. Odysseus, the beggar, strung the box, and shot it through the 12 ax handles. he, and telemachus, killed the suitors. Athena turned Odysseus back into his old self after he killed the suitors. Penelope didn't know if it was really Odysseus, so she told the maids to remove their bed from their tree & into another room. Odysseus got mad, since right after he left for troy, he built their house & bed around a tree. Their bed was basically their symbol. Penelope then realized it was really Odysseus. Penelope & Odysseus were then reunited with each other again. Hope I helped! (:
