Blitzkreig literally means "Lightning War", and it is the popular term for a military strategy used by the Germans in WWII.

Blitzkreig tactics included bombing the target, and then quickly following with large mobile artillery, surprising the enemy and keeping them from putting up a worthwhile defense.

The only other major uses of Blitzkreig are a few bands, a few songs, a few games, and some comic book references.

The German bombing of London known as "the Blitz" was known in Germany as "die Luftschlacht um England" (the war over Great Britain - historically (and even still to this day) many Germans refer to the UK/Great Britain as "England")

The anglicized term "Blitz" was derived from the German "Blitzkrieg" meaning "lightning war", which was the strategy and success of the seemingly unstoppable German war machine at the time.
