Detroit is a city (capital) of Michigan. It is where most of the car companies are located. That's why Michigan is know as the mobile state, and Detroit is know as Motor City.
In the early 1900's several auto manufactures were based in Indiana, Marmon, Stutz, Auburn, to name a few. The Indianapolis 500 track was origanaly buitl as a test facility for local manufacurers. Other companies set up shop further north in the Detroit area, Ford is one example.
