well he didn't actually keep them from coming to see what Polyphemus was wailing about, what actually happen was, as you may know, he told Polyphemus his name was nobody to keep who he really was secret, this also help him as when Polyphemus's brothers ask him what was wrong, he replied
'nobody has blinded me'. his brothers thought he was being stupid and just went back to herding their flocks.
