Pop art is a visual art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the US. Pop art combines it with other objects, for contemplation. Its sort of a Postmodern Art. Pop art often takes as its imagery that which is currently in use in advertising. Product labeling and logos figure prominently in the imagery chosen by pop artists, like in the Campbell's Soup Cans labels, by Andy Warhol. Even the labeling on the shipping carton containing retail items has been used as subject matter in pop art, for example in Warhol's Campbell's soup can.
In the 1950's, Pop Art emerged from artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenburg. This art was based on American POPular culture. This also included the famous Campbell Soup adds and the many brightly colored portraits.
"Pop" Art refers to "popular culture". It is art created to show an object or person in a new way. The chosen object or person would be one that would be easily recognizable by any person, such as a Campbells soup can or Marilyn Monroe as done by Andy Warhol.
This is a definition of 'era' whether in Pop Art or other: A time period of indeterminate length, generally more than one year.
It's short for "popular". The "pop" in pop song has the same origin.
