The layout, of Roman towns was inspired by the castrum (military camp). It was always the same. The town consisted of a rectangle bounded by walls, with streets organized in a grid to form various residential quarters (insulae). Two main roads, called cardus and decumanus maximus, criss-crossed the whole city. Their intersection was the centre of the social and religious life, while four main gates were placed at their ends. All the east-west-oriented roads were called decumanus and all the north-south-oriented streets were called cardus. A small town would have a basilica (public building) which would act as the town hall and a law court and the forum would be the market place which was sometimes surrounded by a quadriporico (porticoes on all four sides). There were temples. Bigger towns would have several basilicas and administrative offices and some temples at the forum and the market place was an area of the complex. Large towns had separate fora (plural of forum) with a forum civilum which was the civil centre with several basilicas, temples, a senate house (which housed a senate modelled on that or Rome) and a comitium (a place where the popular assembly met); and one or more fora venalia (market places) . There were public baths. Bigger towns had a theatre, an amphitheatre (arena) for gladiatorial games. There were shops (tabernae, singular taberna) eating places (thermopolia, singular thermpolium) wine bars (popinae, singular popina). Near the gates there was the mansio, an inn for travellers.
