On a Lincoln penny, the mint mark ("S" for San Francisco, "D" for Denver) would be located just below the date.
There are 6 different kinds of pennies that were minted in 1909 : In circulated condition, they will have the following values : 1909 Indian Head Cent -- $2.00 1909-S Indian Head Cent ("S" is on the back at the bottom) -- $250.00 1909 Lincoln Cent -- $1.00 1909-S Lincoln Cent ("S" is under the date) -- $50.00 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent ("VDB" is on the back at the bottom) -- $3.50 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent ("S" under the date AND "VDB" on the back at the bottom) -- $400-$500 it matters in whatcondition the penny is in

The letters under the dates on Lincoln cents are mint marks and can only be a D or S and are used to identify which mint made the coin. D is for Denver, S is for San Francisco. Also coins with no mint mark means it was made in Philadelphia.
It means the coin was struck in San Francisco. D = Denver No letter = Philadelphia (all other denominations since 1980 use P, though)
It depends on the date, post new question.
It's the year that the coin was minted. If you look under the date you can tell where it was minted, too: "D" = Denver Mint "S" = San Francisco No letter = Philadelphia
The S is the mint mark of the San Francisco mint, where the coin was made. that is not a question it is an answer
It is worth face value unless it has a S under the date.
Not enough information. Post a new question with its date, how worn it is, and whether there is a small S or D under the date.
It means that the coin was minted at the San Fransisco mint. If a penny has a D, it means the coin was minted at the Denver mint. If it has no mintmark, it was minted at the Philadelphia mint.
For a Lincoln cent, any mintmark is under the date on the obverse. Indian Head cents have the mintmark on the reverse under the wreath and can only be an "S" mintmark, on just on the 1908 & 1909 issues.
US cents minted in Philadelphia do not have a mintmark.
No 1972-S small date varieties are known.
Date? grade? is it US?
