Saint James.
San Diego is in spanish already, I don't think is a translation of "Diego" to English as Jaime for James or Eduardo for Edward. San Diego could be "Saint Diego" in English although personal names or place names are not usually translated.

"San" is spanish for "Saint", Diego is a variation of Iago which is the latin verison of the Hebrew name James. So San Diego means "Saint James"

∙ 9y agoWrong!! The city was named after Saint Didacus of Alcalá. Don't know where you would get James from Diego!! LOL. James in Spanish is Jaime, SAN is just Saint in Spanish, like most of the major cities en California, and parts of Baja, its because the misionaries put the names of one saint to each of the mision [church] they pùt in the place.
