∙ 8y agoShylock set 'a pound of flesh' as his price. He pretended it was a joke, but when Antonio could not repay the money, demanded the price. Portia, in disguise as a lawyer, outsmarted Shylock by saying he could take the flesh, as long as he took no blood, which was of course impossible.

∙ 8y agoAn opportunity to kill him. Shylock agrees to lend money to Antonio without interest. There is no monetary return to Shylock for this, and in fact it ties up resources he could be lending at interest to others. He is not doing it out of friendship for Antonio; he hates Antonio first because he is a nasty anti-Semite and secondly because he cuts into Shylock's business by lending money without charging interest. The only benefit to Shylock is that he has got Antonio to agree to offer an unspecified body part as security for the loan, so that if Antonio does not pay on time, he can, he hopes, take that body part totally legally and thus cause Antonio's death.

∙ 6y agoHe wants his money back by a certain day. Not even with interest. But of course . . . if Antonio doesn't pay before that certain day, Shylock can cut off a pound of Antonio's flesh. (Of course, this is what Shylock really wants: a chance to legally kill Antonio in revenge for all his anti-Semitism.)
