The Schutzstaffel, or SS, was founded on 4 April 1925, as a special organisation of the NSDAP, with the express role of protecting Adolf Hitler. The SS evolved from the Saalschutz (hall protection/security) , a group made up of NSDAP volunteers who provided security at rallies and speeches and was a paramilitary arm of the N.S.D.A.P. (Nazi Party). The SS initially was subordinate to the SA (Sturmabteilung) and was responsible for the internal policing of the party. The rank of Untersturmführer was initially that of Sturmführer (as in the SA) but after the Röhm Putsch of 1934 and the destruction of the SA, the SS began to create its own unique rank structure leading to the creation of the rank of Untersturmführer It was the SS's first commissioned rank, roughly equivalent to a second lieutenant (Leutnant) in the German Army.
