Doctor of Osteopathy Osteopathy is a system and philosophy of health care that separated from traditional (allopathic) medical practice about a century ago. It places emphasis on the musculoskeletal system, hence the name-osteo refers to bone and path refers to disease. Osteopaths also believe strongly in the healing power of the body and do their best to facilitate that strength. During this century, the disciplines of osteopathy and allopathic medicine have been converging.

D.O. stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, the degree awarded to graduates of osteopathic medical schools. In the United States, physicians can have either the M.D. or D.O. degree. Both physicians have identical practice rights, and have nearly identical training except for additional training in the musculoskeletal system for graduates of osteopathic medicine schools. In practice, many D.O's are indistinguishable from their M.D. colleagues. D.O's train in many of the same residencies and practice side-by-side in the same hospitals. You may have been treated in the past by a D.O. and never even known it.

Outside the United States, the D.O. degree is awarded to practitioners who use manipulation as their primary treatment modality. In this way, they are similar to chiropractors (D.C.) in the United States. This can create confusion regarding the qualifications of osteopathic physicians in other countries; however, a growing number of countries now recognize the D.O. degree awarded in the United States as that of a physician and grant its holders full practice rights.

They are both equivalent degrees. The DO is trained in much the same way as an MD. They just have a different approach to treatment and patient care. The DO believes in the power of the human body to help in the healing process, and attempts to facilitate that process.

D.O. stands for doctor of osteopathic medicine. M.D. stands for Doctor of Medicine. Both D.O.s and M.D.s are fully qualified physicians licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication but there are some differences between these two kinds of doctors. In the 1880s osteopathic medicine presented an alternative form of care that recognized the body's inherent ability to heal with proper musculoskeletal alignment.

D.O.s practice a "whole person" approach to medicine. Instead of just treating specific symptoms or illnesses, they regard your body as integrated whole. Osteopathic medicine incorporates medical care with personal attention, active listening and engaged service. Doctors of osteopathic medicine view a person's body as an integrated whole instead of just treating specific illnesses or symptoms.
