A brad awl is a hand tool used for making small holes, usually in wood or leather.

It usually has a wooden handle and a pointed blade somewhat like a screwdriver.

The main use in wood is to make a small hole for starting a nail or a screw.

An awl is a carpenter's tool.It is used to make a starter hole for a wood screw. It is basically a hand drill with a screw shaped tip. Electric drills essentially eliminated the need for awls, but traditional woodworkers (folks who like to do things the old way) still use them. Roy Underhill would have used awls on his program "The Woodwright's Shop"

An awl is a pointed instrument for piercing small holes into something - it can have a different shape depending on its use, such as a saddler's awl or a shoemaker's awl.
