∙ 12y agoAn awl is a carpenter's tool.It is used to make a starter hole for a wood screw. It is basically a hand drill with a screw shaped tip. Electric drills essentially eliminated the need for awls, but traditional woodworkers (folks who like to do things the old way) still use them. Roy Underhill would have used awls on his program "The Woodwright's Shop"
