The BIOS (often also known as CMOS) is a Programmed ROM that comes integrated on the motherboard and stores instructions to perform the Power On Self Test (POST) and then load the Bootstrap.

The Operating System Of a computer is a vast set of programs which is impossible to start if it isn't loaded. But to load a program onto the memory of the computer (RAM) which in turn will begin to load the operating system is paradoxical. Hence, the concept of ROM-BIOS was designed in order to cut through this impossible problem.

When we switch on the computer, the BIOS first requests interrupts for all the peripheral devices attached to our computer in order to check whether all of them are working or not. This short test is called the POST.

After the POST, the BIOS then loads a short set of instruction onto the RAM and which again loads the Operating System.

Apart from this exceptional function, the BIOS also has many other uses. Such as; it keeps a record of the Boot devices settings and the clock speed of the processor. One can very well understand what functionality the BIOS adds to the computer being just a small chip.
