An expression in math shows some sort of equality. By equality I mean something is equal to something else... like this

7=7

2+3=5

2 x 7 = 14

These are all expressions using the basic order of operations. The most basic order of operations are addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. In advanced math you have exponents, distribution, factoring, squaring, and square roots. Their are a few more.

In math there is a branch called algebra. This uses expressions to find an unknown. The unknown is called a variable because you can assign that unknown to different equations. Variables are usually associated with letters... like this

m+3=5 In this case m=2

m/2=9 In this case m=18

As you can see the variable "m" can equal different things when it is in different equations. You also don't have to have "m" you can put "a" or "b" or "q" or "z" in there.

a+3=5 In this case a=2

z+3=5 In this case z=2

In higher math expressions become ridiculously hard. You have many variables in one equation and sometimes you can not solve for them. In this case you would assign a graph to it. These equations would look like this.

x2/y + d(1/2) - z3/z7 = y7/z + d(x)
