There are different kinds of musical stress marks that mean different things. All of them are placed above the note that they pertain to. A staccato Is simply a small dot like a period ( . ). a staccatissimo looks like an exclamation point with the dot part being the note head ( ! ) (I personally nave never seen any of these but they were more common in Mozarts days). The marcato is the name for two different kind of stress marks that act slightly different. One looks like an upside down V ( /\ ) and the other is a greater-than sign from mathematics ( > ). There is also the tenuto notated with a horizontal bar ( _ ).
Stacatto is short.
Stacattissimo is even shorter that the stacatto.
Marcatos are played more forcefully than normal.
Tenuto is played long.
A tenuto is a musical articulation mark or musical direction directing that a note or passage is to be held for the full time.

This would be a breath mark. If it looks something like ' at the top then yes this is a breath mark. If there isn't a breath mark, then it could be the end of a slur, that is to say, a set of notes played together with no space in between them. A slur has a mark like a curved line over the line of music notes. Also if there is neither a breath mark nor a slur, it could be what is referred to as the end of a "musical phrase" where the music sounds like it should naturally have a small space of silence. Hope this helped!
