Hmmmmmmmn, I'm hopin you mean as a tattoo what do samurai mean...Well, it can be summed up in one word 'Bushido'...."It originates from the samurai moral code and stresses frugality, loyalty, Martial Arts mastery and honour unto death. " as our very own wikipedia puts it....It all has to do with unswerving service to the master, which may or may not be the SHOGUN or EMPEROR, as any of the feudal lords may have been certain samurai's master.....Remember, these were the people who would use 'sepuku' to regain face if they dishonored their master....You may have heard this as 'Hari kari' which is actually a vulgar term for belly cutting...But when all is said and done they stand for 'HONOR' hope this helps.....tatubaron

nobal man. warriors of Japan.

in 1584 japan was struggling to recover from more than four centuries of internal strife.

the tradialnal rule of the emperors had been over thrown in the twelfth century, although each successive empoeror remaint the figuerhead of japan, his powers were very much reeduced. japan has seen a contuinous civial war between the provinical lords, warrior monks and brigands, all fighting each other for land and power.

in the 15th and 16th centuries the lords, called daimyo, built huge stone castles to protect themselves and their lands as well as castles towns outside the walls grew. these wars naturally restricted the growth of trade and impoverished the whole country.

in 1573 one man, Oda Nobunga, came to the fore in Japan. he became the Shogun or military dictator, and for nine years succeeded in gaing control of almost the whole country. When Nobunaga was assassinated in 1582, a commoner took over the government. Toyotomi Hideyoshi continued the work of unifying Japan which Nobunaga had begain, ruthlessly putting down any traces of insurrection. He revived the old gulf between the warriors of Japan- The samurrai-the commoners, by introducing restrictions on the wearg of swords. "Hideyoshi's sword hunt" , as it was know, meant that only samurai were allowed to wear two swords: the short one which everyone could wear and the long one which distinguished the samurai from the rest.

there where basically four classes of person, the samurai, farmers, artisans and merchants.

\the orgins of the samurai class in the Kondei system was esblished in 792 ad,

whereby the Japanese army was revived by stiffening the ranks with permanet traing officers recruited from among young sons of the high families.

these officers were mounted, wore armour, and used the bow and sword.

In 782 the emperor Kammu started building Kyoto and in Kyoto he built a traing hall which exists to this day called the Butokuden, meaning "Hall of the virtues of war" .

with in a few years of this revial the feirce Ainu, the aboriginal inhabitants of Japan who had until then confounded the army's attempts to move them from their wild lodgings, were drivin far off to the northern island, Hokkaido.

When the grat provincial armies were gradullay disbansed under Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, many out of work samurai roamed the country redundant in a era of peace.

Now the samurai was now called "ronin" or "wave men".

So samurai has different meanings just depending on when it was used,

warrior, nobal man, ronin, wave men.

hope that helps and you enjoyed a peice of some history.
